It hasn’t always been a nice group stage for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) in the Gold Cup, but at the end of the day it’s a results-driven business and the U.S. led the group by winning all three games. A blunt 1-0 win against Haiti was followed by a 6-1 beating against Martinique. The group stage final got off to a dream start when Shaq Moore took the US 1-0 up against Canada after just 20 seconds, but after that neither team created many good scoring opportunities and the US could watch the game. Now it’s time for the knockout round and a quarter-final date against Jamaica.
Gregg Berhalter did exceptionally well in the group stages of the two Gold Cups where he headed the USA: played six games, won six games, scored 19 goals and conceded only once. But two years ago in the Gold Cup quarter-finals, the USA showed one of their worst performances under Berhalter, as the USA was in a life-and-death battle with tiny Curacao and despite being possessed and shot at night. This not-too-distant memory gives many US fans hope that the team is much better prepared for Sunday’s game against Jamaica.
Jamaica’s path to the Gold Cup quarter-finals has been surprisingly smooth. They secured their place in the tournament back in November 2019 by winning the Nations League Group B and overtaking players like Antigua & Barbuda, Guyana and Aruba. In fact, they went undefeated during this qualifying period, recording six wins and one draw. So far it has been a little more difficult at this tournament. They won the opening game of Group C 2-0 against Suriname, but then quickly fell behind in the next game against Guadeloupe. After the defeat, however, they quickly equalized and found a late winner through Junior Flemmings. But in the decisive group game they lost to Costa Rica 0: 1. The headliners of Reggae Boyz are Andre Blake of the Philadelphia Union in goal, Adrian Mariappa and Kemar Lawrence in defense, Devon Williams in midfield and in front is Shamar Nicholson of Charleroi in Belgium with 8 goals in 21 internationals to lead all Jamaicans in the squad .
1. This is the third USMNT appearance at the A&T Stadium in Arlington, the first two being in 2013 and 2017. All three were for the knockout round of the Gold Cup.
2. Walker Zimmerman was pushed out of the squad due to an injury sustained in the first half against Canada.
